It is a day of combining work with care for the twins.
It is a fictional day that combines some of my memories of what it means to be a brave dad (I think), one who believes in fairness
Diving in. Wake up early, prepare the bottles for feeding the twins. Quickly take a shower, I feed the boy, wife feeds the girl.
Nappy change and cleaning, finish bottle and leave the baby on the mat. Go and iron some clothes. Take something for breakfast. Be on call if the twins need anything whilst wife takes a shower or goes running. Time flies. She comes back and I need to leave.
Miss one of the trains and take the next one. I can beat the delay by running. I get to the city and take the underground. Get to the place with ten minutes to spare.
Sit in the meeting, grab a glass of water and ask for an expense claim form. I fill it whilst we start the meeting. We wait for the others. I feel full of energy, or maybe it is adrenaline. I hope the meeting will only take one hour. I said to wife at I should be back before three.
So it is twelve and we finish the meeting. I get approached by my host, he asks me if I want to continue being in my current role for another year. I reply that as long as I can do some work from home and be there in the meeting one time only, I should be fine.
I invite my host for a coffee, it feels I need to talk to someone about my life. My host knows me. We go for coffee. We talk about the workplace here and there, I express my concerns, he gives me some advice. It feels good at least to have talked to someone. Good hour spent talking and catching up. This is my social activity of the month I think.
Diving out. I leave, the race starts again. I go back home. Beat the clock by arriving half a hour earlier.
Feeding time again, change nappies, playtime. I get changed, need to feel at home now.
We wait for the bathing time and the last feed. I check my email, I reply to what I can. Some conversation with wife about the meeting. She tells me how she fed the twins whilst I was away.
Bathing, feeding, washing, sterilising, that is how day ends. And it is wife and I sharing responsibilities and roles.
Good day.
Next working day is a different one. I meet some of my students. Same routine, no train but driving to work. Stay there for a three hours. One of the students does not show up. I take the time to clean up and shred some paper. It feels good. But time flies and I need to dive out and go home for the next feed!
